How does an ELISA IgE allergy test work?
An ELISA IgE allergy test, also known as an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for IgE antibodies, is a highly sensitive and specific way to identify allergies. Here's how it works:
a. Blood sample: A small blood sample is taken from your finger.
b. Antigen immobilization: 33+ of the most common indoor and outdoor allergens you might be allergic to are immobilized on a plate.
c. Incubation with blood serum: Your blood serum is added to the plate and incubated. If you have specific IgE antibodies to any of the allergens present, they will bind to the immobilized allergens.
d. Measurement and interpretation: The color intensity is measured and compared to reference values to determine the presence and severity of an allergic response to each allergen tested.
How accurate is the allergy test?
ELISA IgE tests are generally considered highly accurate. They can detect even small amounts of IgE antibodies, with a reported sensitivity of over 95% and specificity of over 90%. You can learn more about it here.
What are IgE antibodies?
